Let's resolve NOT to resolve
By Cat
Every year we wait around for New Year's to change our lives.
And most of us — 60 percent of us, more specifically — will likely break our pledges to lose weight, quit smoking, learn a new language, cut up our credit cards and stop dating bad boys by, oh, Jan. 2.
According to a Marist Poll, more than half of Americans aren't even bothering to make New Year's resolutions this year. Only 40 percent of people reported they plan or may plan to turn over a new leaf come Jan. 1.
So why bother?
Well, first of all, it's always good to have goals.
Most folks say they're going to lose weight — it's the most popular resolution, with 20 percent of Americans making this vow and returning to the gym they haven't seen since 1998 — but they're not coming up with a plan.
That's the problem.
We have goals — sure, lose weight, that's great — but we're not figuring out how to reach those goals.
So we give up.
Oh, we've all been there.
On New Year's Day, you lace up your shoes — well, after dusting them off — and head out for a run. I'm going to run the marathon this year, you say to yourself. I'm going to run every day until my legs fall off.
Then your legs start to hurt, your breathing becomes laborious, and you're wondering why you even bothered getting up that morning to do this. And you've only run the distance of a block! You call yourself pathetic and stop, turn around and wander back home, where you indulge in a box of cookies and a "Top Chef" marathon.
So I'm suggesting an alternative to the traditional New Year's resolution:
Instead of pledging to change your life, why not pledge to embrace it? Need to lose weight? OK, get to it. But for now, love your thighs. They're holding you up, after all!
What's your plan for 2009?

CAT,
It is hard to quit anything if you are near perfect. I think I may be almost there...except don't ask the spouse unit. Her list is way too long about things I need to work on!?!
When she commands or demands, I do like RONW.....

Guud Morning Cat,
I don't make any New Years Resolutions, never did. What ever happens, happens, that's the way I look at it. There's a reason why things happens and why things don't happen.

Good morning. I gave up making New Year's resolutions awhile ago. I used to make them - and yup, they were usually of the lose weight variety - but they always fell through. So now, I just TRY (I said try) to be healthy

My plan for twenty ought nine is to stop working so much. As I approach the fourth quarter of my life my ambitions are more like what they were in the first quarter: I wanna go out and play.

PS: Cat, been meaning to ask, but keep forgetting: How about another vblog from you in the new year? Put the dog in it too.

Good morning, fellow bloggers!
Yes, I too have fallen victim to the new year resolution syndrome... My attempt for 2009? Get this, say hello to strangers. Whether at Starbucks, Foodland or movies, saying it to complete strangers is tougher than it sounds.
Try it, it can't hurt?
Happy new year!

Don't need a plan if you Da Man! Don't think, just do it. And do it with a smile!

I love the one about saying hi to strangers...that's where having an adorable dog helps a lot. Mine is to attempt not worrying so much although it gets more difficult lately.
Thanks for coming in to blog Cat, and may 2009 be a better year for all of us.

I agree. New Year's resolutions don't mean much down the road. Nothing but empty promises to yourself.
Why bother?
btw, I'm gonna lose 30 pounds by May.

Oh well, like every other New Year's day for more than I care to think, its a morning of cooking tempura for the family. It's okay since the food makes people happy and that's a very good thing. A happy and safe New Years to you all!
